Il Bosco della Ragnaia è un parco boschivo e giardino creato dall'artista americano Sheppard Craige a San Giovanni d'Asso, un piccolo paese in Toscana, vicino a Siena. Anche se alcune parti sembrano antiche, il Bosco è un'opera contemporanea che ha avuto inizio nel 1996 e continua ancora oggi.
Sotto alte querce si possono trovare molte inscrizioni che accumulano muschio in attesa di essere notate da un visitatore. Alcune saranno familiari, altre enigmatiche, mentre altre ancora esprimono un senso capriccioso di Sheppard. Tra le costruzioni degne di nota vi sono: L’Altare dello Scetticismo, il Centro dell'Universo, e di un Oracolo di Te Stesso. Il Bosco non offre un senso, ma è, al contrario, aperto a tutte le interpretazioni.
Sheppard parla di un epoca di molti anni fa quando il bosco era governato da Saggi. Lui ripete la domanda sonora con la quale i Saggi concludevano i loro canti: Se Non Qui, Dove?
Il Bosco della Ragnaia
Just across the border into Tuscany, at San Giovanni d’Asso, Il Bosco della Ragnaia is also an artist’s life work and, in its way, just as grandiose. Sheppard Craige, an American, met with incomprehension bordering on hostility when he bought six hectares of woodland in 1995 and started work on a garden that he declared from the outset would be open to anyone who wanted to use it. Working with local young people he lured away from video game machines in the village bar, Craige hacked back the tangle of undergrowth beneath age-old holm oaks to fashion a magical green world. The garden is constructed around a long central axis, with regular beds laid out at its hub, but the resemblance to anything formal or Italian stops there. Those beds are knotted masses of periwinkle and ivy, edged with mossy tufa blocks.
“My wife often says to me: 'You spent all those years getting yourself educated; now all you do is dig in the mud’,” says Craige, who has an unnerving tendency of appearing when least expected out of the foliage, his shock of white hair and little round glasses giving him a wood-nymph air. “But this is my creation. What better thing to do with an education?”
Among the trees – and out in the more severe lines of his newer “hot” garden in the sun-baked field running alongside the bosco (wood) – Craige’s sculptural works are as much part of the landscape as the plants are. Two enormous lengths of iron piping suspended from a tree branch are just begging to be swung towards each other, sending a resounding echo up the hillside and out across the surrounding fields; the red stripe on one and orange on the other match, in autumn, the changing colours of the ripening strawberry tree fruit nearby. Small carved tablets express the artist’s ever-questioning view of the world: “Se non qui, dove?” (If not here, where?), asks one. “Que sais-je?” (What do I know?), says another.
